The fortunes of Stonor house and chapel are strongly tied to the travails of the Catholics in Britain. When Henry VIII formed the Church of England in the 1530s Catholics, including the Stonor family were forced to take a much reduced part in public life. Crippling fines were levied and many were persecuted and forced to go into hiding.

The rally started in 1992 and has grown now to one of the largest in Scotland. The Rally is held annually on the third Sunday of september; with over 1500 entries in 2016.

Each one day stage will comprise an average daily drive of 180 miles, with an approximate overall distance of 3,600 miles over the 18-day event. Start is the National Motor Museum, Beaulieu and the finish is in the New Forest
